Woodall is CIC MVP, Jessee wins 1st Blasingame Award

Posted by Van Williams, ALB Media Director | May 30, 2019

South seniors Jacob Woodall and Brody Jessee were two of the biggest players in the Cook Inlet Conference and they both walked away with two of the biggest individual awards as the 2019 all-league honors were handed out.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Woodall was named Don Rabung CIC Most Valuable Player and the 6-foot-4, 190-pound Jessee won the inaugural Wade Blasingame Top Pitcher Award.

Woodall was named first team all-conference at starting pitcher and first base.

At the plate he hit .393 with eight RBIs and six runs in 10 league games. In five appearances on the mound, he tied for the league lead with 33 strikeouts and was third with 20 innings. He finished 2-1 with a save and 1.75 ERA.

Woodall is the third straight South player to win MVP honors, following Lian Lincoln in 2018 and Jonny Homza in 2017. Other South MVPs include Willy Homza in 2015, Max Karnos in 2013 and Zach Sterling in 2007.

Woodall will play college ball at NCAA D2 Saint Martin’s University.

Jessee is a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher headed to NCAA D1 Gonzaga University.

He finished third in the league with 22 strikeouts in only 14.2 innings. In three appearances he was 1-1 with a 1.43 ERA. He threw a five-inning 1-hitter against playoff team Eagle River.

The first-ever CIC top pitcher award is named after Blasingame, the president of Houston Contracting and a partner of the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, who over the two decades has left an indelible mark on youth baseball in Alaska through his undying commitment, networking and support.

The CIC all-league team is voted on by the conference’s eight head coaches and stats are based on a 10-game league season.

Other top individual winners included Dimond slugger Zach Jenkins and Chugiak catcher Trystan Costanios.

Jenkins won the CIC Big Stick Award after he led the league with a .542 batting average and .667 on-base percentage. He drove in seven runs and scored 12 runs, thanks in part to 10 stolen bases. He was 13-for-24 at the plate, with two doubles.

Costanios flashed a .986 fielding percentage and threw out two base runners. He added four assists. He had just one passed ball and one error in 10 games.
