Chugiak clinches state berth, 3 teams vie for other spot

The Mustangs exploded for four runs in the 11th inning to double up the Wolverines at Mulcahy Stadium and win the Cook Inlet Conference title as well as clinch a berth to the ASAA state tournament.

Chugiak has won eight games in a row.

Braden Schackelford and Justin Nevells had RBI singles and Mason Peace was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to knock in another run to highlight Chugiak’s crooked number.

At 8-1 with one game left Monday, Chugiak is two games up on the field as South, West and Service are all 6-3. One of those three teams will clinch the CIC’s other berth to the state tournament.

South, West and Service will all face must-win situations Monday. An if-necessary game is slated for Wednesday in case two teams are tied with the same record after 10 games.

Chugiak’s Sam Hall pitched 5.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.

Ian Frizelle went 3-for-5, Trystan Costanios had two RBIs and Christian Cambridge went 2-for-5 with a double and RBI.

South’s Brody Jessee went 2-for-4 and tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning with a two-out RBI single.

Reid Brock, Damian Mohl and Ryan Bailey also had RBIs.

South starter Gage Webster struck out 11 batters over seven innings. Reliever Ryan Bailey had six Ks in 3.3 innings but ran into trouble in the 11th.

Service 10, West 7

Henry Helgeson pitched 5.2 innings and then moved to third base and immediately snared a line drive to end the scoring threat in what might have been the defining play of the game to carry the Cougars at Mulcahy Stadium.

Nathan Cole recorded a four-out save and Chris Malagodi had three RBIs for Service has won five games in a row to propel itself into a three-way chase with South and West for the CIC’s second and final berth to the ASAA state tournament.

Hutton Stiles stroked a pair of triples and finished 3-for-3 with three runs. Sam Bourdon and Dalton Conti also had RBIs.

The Cougars overcame six errors to hold off the Eagles.

West’s Declan Dammeyer and Leland Wilson each had two hits and an RBI.

Shawn Jones had three runs and three stolen bases. Chris Crespo had a base hit, RBI, run and pitched four innings.

Alex Alverez and Luke Langnes came out of the bullpen to allow just one run over three innings.

Eagle River 6, East 3

Daniel Bodine's two-out, two-run single in the fifth inning provided the Wolves some breathing room and a three-run cushion en route to win over the T-birds at Mulcahy Stadium.

Brendan Miles knocked in two runs. Sterling Retzlaff went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs. Kam Williams scored twice.

In the fourth, East pulled within 3-2 on RBI singles from Jalen John and Charlie White.

Starters Ricky Gatter of East and Aaron Davis of Eagle River were locked in a 3-2 duel through four innings before Bodine’s base hit.

Jake Andresen and Sean Carey each hit inside-the-park home runs and drove in three runs as the Lynx pounded out their most runs in two weeks in a five-inning win at Mulcahy Stadium.

Quinn Bates-Janigo went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

Starter Kyler Maisey and reliever Conor Bates-Janigo struck out eight batters.

Bartlett's Taylor McCart went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Ian Byrd got a base hit and scored.
