He didn’t get the win, but Wasilla’s Nolan Monaghan did show that he belongs at the NCAA D1 level.

The junior pitcher earned his first start with Austin Peay State University and performed admirably in the face of instant adversity.

Monaghan struck out seven of the 16 batters he faced over a career-high 3.1 innings in an 8-3 loss to Murray State in Clarksville, Tennessee.

He struck out the leadoff hitter – but a passed ball allowed him to reach base. Then he hit the next batter and walked the next guy to load the bases.

At that point it would’ve been easy to write him off, but Monaghan battled back.

Sure, he allowed a two-run single, but he got out of the first inning with a double play and then struck out five of the next six batters, including the side in the third inning.
